Zoo Animals May Hold Key to Butanol Fuel

Plant-eating zoo animals may hold the secret to renewable fuel.

Researchers at Tulane University have identified more than a dozen different strains of bacteria in exotic animal feces that can help turn plant waste into butanol, an alcohol used as fuel.

Once the researchers determine the best bacteria for producing bio-butanol - they plan to genetically modify that bacteria to produce higher yields of the chemical and to digest cellulose.
